So, we’re just back from our first visit to a Caravan and Motorhome Club site, at Tewkesbury - and very enjoyable it was too. Ours was a fully serviced pitch on the ‘second loop’ for anyone who knows the site.
First things first, the wardens were welcoming and checkin was efficient. You’re kind of left to find your own pitch in the category you’ve chosen. Next time we might go for pitch 81, which has a straight line view of Tewkesbury Abbey which dominates the town and is just out of the entrance and across a public park.
As you’d expect, the facilities block was spotless and the grounds neat and tidy, although the Platinum Jubilee cardboard Her Maj and two guards by the entrance were looking a little tired by now.
We noticed that at the site, and in the town generally, there’s still a lot of public wariness about Covid - indeed the staff in the Great Wall Chinese takeaway continue to wear masks as a reminder it’s not gone away.
As a tourist town, of course, Tewkesbury continues to attract visitors from all over the country and the club site is that in microcosm.
I can’t remember why, but the first time I went through Tewkesbury a few years ago I thought it looked dull enough not to stop. My mistake, clearly. There’s plenty to see along the River Avon and through the town centre, especially as the town was getting ready for it's 'Live' festival at the bank holiday weekend.
We’d recommend the Nottingham Arms, a tiny/cosy bar on the main drag, and the Tudor House Hotel, where the food is expensive, but tasty.
We did take a bus to Cheltenham on the spur of the moment - and tried Mowgli’s Indian street food for the first time. Maybe a bit expensive for lunch, but the flavours were amazing. I’ve had the Mowgli cookbook for a while and last night tried recreating their Agra ginger chicken curry and the Mowgli House Prawn Curry. Panch Phoron is an Indian five spice blend, who knew?
We’re learning something new every day.
Also got to see some cricket for the first time in ages at the Tewkesbury CC president’s day. Looked like the Prez had brought in a couple of ringers, but the cider was good.
